In accient times the Akrabim ascent was an important pass along the spice routes through the Arava. The Romans saw that fact and built a decent road over the pass with a fairly easy grade. Then they charged tolls for eveyone using the route. The modern road snakes up the side of the mountain and requires nerves of steel to navigate.
