We stayed in Tiberias our first night in the Land. I took a few pictures of the Kinneret while I was there, as well as a few pictures of archaeological features in the town.
The city of Tiberias was built by Herod Antipas (one of Herod the Great's sons) in the first century CE. It was designed around 17 natural hot springs and became a popular tourist spot. Yehudah HaNasi completed the Mishnah in Tiberias around 200 CE, and Maimonides (the RAMBAM) was buried there in 1204.
The only mention of the town of Tiberias in the Scriptures is in John 6:23. After Yeshua fed the crowd of 5,000 he crossed the Kinneret Sea to Capernaum. Then some people got into boats at Tiberias and sailed across looking for him. Yeshua rebuked them because they only looked for him so that they could get some more food. "Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life..."
