Extended Résumé

A person's experience is comprised of much more than a résumé can adequately convey. With that fact in mind, I have organized this addendum to my résumé that details some of skills, my experience, and some other information about my professional life. The main points in the following list are all found on my regular résumé, and the deeper explanation for each is included beneath it.

I have worked in a variety of positions since I graduated from high school, and the majority of that work has been in the Hospitality and Property Management industries. However, while working in those industries I found myslf being drawn toward editorial pursuits: proofreading, editing, writing, and formatting for books, documents, forms, and articles. Since that draw first came to my attention, I have focused my energies in these areas. My intention is to become well-versed in the various aspects of editing and proofreading, with a special emphasis on the use of computer technology in those areas.

Skills

  • Proficiency in the automation of electronic text editing
    • I am very proficient in the use of Perl and Regular Expressions to edit documents. These skills are central to the work I do at WORDsearch and to other projects I do on the side.
  • Proficiency in the use of XHTML and Cascading Style Sheets to produce web pages, e-books, and other media.
    • I designed this web site from scratch, and I have also created other sites for friends and companies (see more here). Though these sites attest to my ability to use XHTML and CSS for web design, I am much more interested in the use of mark-up languages in electronic publishing.
  • Organization, process evaluation, and the pursuit of projects from inception to completion.
    • I am a very organized person, and I enjoy helping others declutter and organize their space. Since this is an area that greatly interests me, it can be seen in every other area of my life.
    • I am very good at evaluating processes and determining the resources and time needed to complete them. In most cases, my estimates are too close to the actual time needed to complete the project, which leads to sticky situations when something happens unexpectedly.
  • More than 4 years of management and supervision experience.
    • These years of experience gave me the ability to control project deadlines and experience in dealing with managing the subordinates and the resources at my disposal. These skills have been invaluable as I have moved into positions that are more project-oriented than team-oriented.
  • Proficient in the operation of computer applications in a Windows environment.
    • I am not only fluent in the use of Microsoft Office, I have experience using many other applications in a Windows environment. I also find it easy to comprehend new applications and utilize them expertly in a short amount of time.
    • In addition to software applications, I have been working on increasing my overall computer knowledge by building computers for my self and for friends and by reading more about computer hardware applications.

Experience

  • I am growing in my knowledge of XHTML and CSS. The XHTML mark-up language is the future of web design and development, offering the familiarity of HTML and the stability for XML. The use of Cascading Style Sheets is integral to the development of XHTML, allowing for a much wider range of flexibility than ever before in web design. These languages are also important in the future of eBook publishing, since the Internet will continue to be the most efficient meduim for distributing electronic media for years to come.
  • As an eBook Developer and now the eBook Development Manager for WORDsearch, I have:
    • worked out various procedures and processes, and streamlined the department, almost doubing our output in one year, while cutting costs significantly.
    • edited and updated the company's manual on the preparation of books for publication in XHTML and CSS, specifically related to the development of those books with specific formatting to activate features in WORDsearch’s sotware programs.
    • edited and updated a manual on the in-house procedures for preparing Bibles for publication in our software program (utilizing a very simple, proprietary mark-up language). Upon seeing the final product of this project, my supervisor, Thomas Brady, said, "If I ever write a book, you are going to be my editor!"
    • learned the Standard Template for Electronic Publishing (STEP), a document mark-up standard adopted by various Bible publishers for their electronic books, allowing those books to be viewable with all STEP-compaible software programs. STEP is an archaic, proprietary document mark-up language based on the RTF (Rich Text Format) standard. It has only been utilized in the electronic Bible publishing market, and within that market it is quickly being phased out in favor of XML and other, more powerful mark-up languages.
  • I served as the editor and proofreader for The Personal Messianic Prayerbook: A Daily Siddur by Dr. Michael Fink. This siddur consists of prayers in Hebrew and English (with transliterations), and I made grammatical, layout, formatting, and content corrections and suggestions. Upon my completion of this extensive editing project, Dr. Fink said of my work, "You are the editor every author dreams of!"
  • I was a writer for Geek.com, a technology web site, for more than 2 years. I wrote articles related to current technology news and events five days per week.
  • As the Assistant General Manager for a brand new apartment complex, I developed, edited, and formatted all of the forms, worksheets, and other document-related resources that we utilized in the opening and operation of the property. I also prepared various SOP manuals, training manuals, and emergency procedure handbooks.

I am always looking for new areas in which to grow, and I have found that there is very little that I can't do when I put my mind to it.
